But the point is when the delay of the milestones causes difficulty for the child in the day today life there comes the issues. Similarly ,when the speech milestones are delayed and the child faces difficulty in expressing and understanding others then you might need to consult a speech language pathologist for the better outcomes and clarification.

I am Gunashreya Raj speech language pathologist at Reviviscence Rehab and in this blog I will tell you about what is speech therapy and benefits of it.

Speech therapy is a specialized intervention provided by a speech-language pathologist (SLP). It focuses on improving a child's ability to communicate effectively. Speech therapy consists of techniques and activities aimed at improving overall communication by addressing.

·Speech (articulation): How sounds and words are spoken

·Language: Understanding and using words to communicate

·Fluency: The flow of speech (e.g., stuttering)

·Voice: Vocal quality, pitch, and volume

·Social communication: Using language appropriately in different situations

·Feeding and swallowing: In some cases, therapy also addresses oral motor skills

Why Would My Child Need Speech Therapy?

Children may require speech therapy for a wide range of reasons. These can include stuttering, difficulty pronouncing words, and voice problems. Some children may struggle to understand language, have a limited vocabulary, or use words inappropriately. Others may have difficulty forming sentences, organizing their thoughts verbally, or may be affected by hyperactivity and attention issues. In some cases, children may also experience feeding and swallowing difficulties, such as trouble chewing, coughing during meals, or refusing food altogether. Additionally, speech therapy may be necessary following an illness that has affected a child’s ability to communicate. If you notice that your child is not meeting age-appropriate developmental milestones or is falling behind peers in communication skills, intensive speech therapy could be highly beneficial.

What are the Benefits of Speech Therapy for Children?

Speech therapy has many benefits for children, including:

    1. Improves Communication Skills:

Speech and language therapy goes far beyond simply helping children speak. It encompasses all aspects of communication, including both spoken language and alternative methods of expression. For children who are nonverbal or have limited speech, therapists provide tools and strategies to help them communicate effectively. This may involve unaided methods like gestures , as well as aided approaches such as communication books, picture boards, speech devices, voice output systems, or communication apps. Speech Therapy plays a vital role in supporting language development, understanding, and overall communication—giving every child a voice, regardless of how they express it.

    2. Improves Social Skills:

Speech therapy doesn’t just focus on words—it also teaches children how to use language in social settings. This includes learning how to start a conversation, take turns while talking, use appropriate body language, and understand social cues.

    3. Helps with Reading:

A speech delay can impact more than just verbal communication—it can also affect a child’s ability to listen, read, and write. Strong literacy skills are closely tied to effective communication. When a child learns to read and spell, they gain powerful tools for expressing themselves clearly and confidently. Building these foundational skills not only supports language development but also opens up new pathways for communication and learning.

    4. Enhances Alternative Communication Methods:

Communication isn’t just about speaking words—we all use many ways to communicate, like gestures, facial expressions, eye contact, and body language. This is called a total communication approach. For children who have difficulty speaking, it’s important to teach other ways to express themselves. This can include using signs for common needs like “bathroom,” “eat,” or “drink,” or tapping someone’s shoulder to get their attention. If a child uses certain sounds often, we can give those sounds meaning. For example, if a child says “ma” consistently, we can teach them to use it to mean “amma.” Or if they say “ba,” we might use that to mean “come ” if it’s something important to them. The goal is to help each child find the best way to share their thoughts, needs, and feelings—even if it’s not through spoken words.

    5. Boosts Confidence and Self-Esteem:

Children who struggle to communicate can feel frustrated or embarrassed. Therapy helps them gain the skills they need to interact successfully, which can dramatically improve their self-confidence and willingness to participate in social settings.

    6. Supports Children with Special Needs:

Speech therapy plays a crucial role in the development of children with conditions such as:

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Down syndrome

Apraxia of speech

Hearing impairments

Developmental delays

Cerebral palsy

    7. While helping children develop communication skills is a vital part of the field, it’s far from the whole story.

Speech therapy isn’t just for kids — it’s for anyone, at any age, who wants to improve how they communicate, use their voice, or swallow safely. From teens to adults to older adults, speech-language pathologists work with individuals facing a wide variety of challenges.

In this post, we’ll highlight who can benefit from speech therapy later in life, the types of issues addressed in adult therapy, and how it can lead to meaningful improvements in communication, confidence, and quality of life.

I am Gunashreya Raj, Speech Language Pathologist at Reviviscence Rehab and in this we will talk about Speech therapy for adults.

Adults and Speech Therapy: Who Can It Help?

Speech therapy deals with communication, cognition, voice, and swallowing — areas that affect people of all ages. Some common adult populations who may benefit from speech-language therapy include:

Stroke survivors

People with neurological conditions (e.g., Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis )

Adults with speech sound disorders or stuttering

Transgender individuals seeking voice therapy

People with strained or hoarse voice

Adults with brain injuries or cognitive-communication disorders

Older adults with dementia or memory concerns

What Can Speech Therapy Help With in Adults?

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) do far more than help with pronunciation. Here's a breakdown of key areas adult therapy can support:

1. Speech & Articulation:

Some adults present with residual articulation disorders, such as persistent lisps or difficulty producing specific phonemes, which were not fully addressed during childhood. Others may develop acquired speech impairments later in life as a result of neurological conditions (e.g., stroke, traumatic brain injury, or degenerative diseases) or structural trauma affecting the speech mechanism.

2. Language & Communication:

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) provide intervention for individuals experiencing expressive and/or receptive language deficits, word-finding difficulties (anomia), and impaired cognitive-linguistic functioning—often resulting from conditions such as cerebrovascular accidents (stroke), traumatic brain injuries (TBI), or progressive neurological disorders (e.g., dementia, Parkinson’s disease, or ALS).

3. Stuttering/Fluency:

Developmental stuttering may persist into adulthood and does not always resolve during childhood. Adults who stutter can benefit from fluency-enhancing strategies, desensitization techniques, and cognitive-behavioral approaches aimed at reducing speech-related tension, managing communication anxiety, and increasing functional communication confidence across various speaking contexts.

4. Voice Therapy:

Individuals with high vocal demands, such as educators, singers , and dubbing artist , are at increased risk for developing voice disorders characterized by vocal fatigue, dysphonia, or phonatory strain. Additionally, some individuals present with organic or neurogenic voice disorders—such as vocal fold nodules or spasmodic dysphonia—which often require specialized voice therapy provided by a speech-language pathologist.

Voice therapy is also essential for transgender individuals seeking a voice that better aligns with their gender identity — focusing on pitch, resonance, intonation, and communication style.

5. Swallowing Difficulties (Dysphagia):

Dysphagia is a common condition, particularly following cerebrovascular accidents (stroke), surgical interventions, or as a result of neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, ALS, or multiple sclerosis. Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) conduct comprehensive swallowing evaluations and implement evidence-based dysphagia management strategies to enhance swallow safety, reduce the risk of aspiration, and improve overall mealtime efficiency and comfort.

6. Cognitive-Communication Therapy:

This refers to cognitive-communication skills, including working memory, sustained and selective attention, executive functions such as organization, planning, and problem-solving. Intervention in these areas is particularly beneficial following acquired brain injuries (e.g., traumatic brain injury or stroke), in the context of neurodegenerative conditions (e.g., dementia), or for individuals experiencing mild cognitive impairment or other cognitive-linguistic deficits

Why Adult Speech Therapy Matters

Communication is key to independence, connection, and quality of life. When it’s disrupted — whether by injury, illness, or something you’ve always struggled with — it can affect your confidence, career, relationships, and health.

Speech-language therapy can facilitate the recovery of impaired functions, the development of compensatory strategies, and, in some cases, the restoration of vocal abilities. Through targeted intervention, adults can experience significant improvements in their communication and quality of life, including:

Successful reintegration into the workforce

Enhanced participation and effectiveness in social and professional communication

Improved self-advocacy and assertiveness in expressing needs

Reduction of communication-related anxiety and increased confidence in public speaking

Final Thoughts: Speech Therapy is for people with all ages:

Speech therapy isn’t just about sounding “perfect” — it’s about being understood, expressing yourself, and connecting with others.

Whether you're recovering from a stroke, managing Parkinson’s, navigating gender transition, or just want to speak more clearly — speech therapy can help.

If someone in your family or someone you know struggles with any of this and confused about what to do then contact Reviviscence Rehab for Quality support and guidance.

West Tambaram, Perungalathur:

14, Sriram Nagar, Old Perungalathur,

Call: 09940400943

Padur, OMR,

96, Veeranam Road,

Birndavan Phase-I,

Call: 09940400943

At Revivisense Rehabilitation Institute, Sensory Integration Therapy (SIT) helps children learn to process, adapt, and thrive in a world filled with sensory information.

1. What Is Sensory Integration?

Sensory integration is the brain's ability to absorb, organize, and respond to information from the environment. Our senses - sight, sound, touch, taste, smell, balance (vestibular), and body awareness (proprioception) - work together to guide everyday activities.

When this process is affected, children may have difficulty paying attention, coordinating, controlling emotions, or learning new skills.

2. Why do some children struggle?

Children with autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, or other developmental challenges often face sensory processing disorder (SPD).

For them, everyday experiences like brushing their teeth, putting on socks, or joining a classroom can be overwhelming.

Some people may be hypersensitive (oversensitive), avoiding touch or sounds, while others may be hyposensitive

(under sensitive), constantly seeking out movement, pressure or noise. Both forms can affect learning, behavior, and social

development.

3. Parents can observe sessions at home, understand strategies, and repeat exercises. This ensures consistency

and accelerates progress. Moreover, treatment is evidence-based, goal-oriented, and continuously monitored through reviews

and evaluations. Beyond Therapy: Creating a Sensory Lifestyle

SIT doesn't just stop at the hospital.

As parents, one of the most exciting parts of watching our children grow is hearing their little voices emerge—those first words, adorable mispronunciations, and funny phrases. But what if your toddler isn’t talking as much as you expected? Or doesn’t seem to understand language the way other kids their age do? In this blog we’ll help you to explore the most common causes of Speech and Language Delay which every parent should be aware of.

I am Gunashreya Raj ,Speech Language Pathologist at Reviviscence Rehab and I’ll share practical and evidence based information in a way it is easy to understand and apply in everyday life.

Common Causes of Speech and Language Delays

1. Developmental Delays

Some children experience delays in language as part of developmental delay. This might include challenges with motor skills, social interaction, activities of daily living, cognition skills and emotional skills, Receptive language and Expressive language.

One specific condition is Developmental Language Disorder (DLD)—a condition where children have trouble learning language for no clear reason. It’s more common than you might think but often goes undiagnosed.

2. Hearing Problems

It’s hard to learn to speak if you can’t clearly hear the words being said around you. Chronic ear infections, fluid buildup, or hearing loss (whether mild or profound) can significantly affect speech development.

Hearing loss can delay speech entirely or cause difficulty with pronouncing words correctly.

Hearing test can often identify whether this is a contributing factor, Children are often prone to middle ear infections so it is important to keep track on it.

3. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a child communicates, interacts socially, and processes the world around them. One of the most common early signs of autism is delayed speech and language development.

It’s good to keep in mind that autism is a spectrum, which means it looks different for every child. Some kids might have a big vocabulary and speak in full sentences, but still have trouble using language in social situations—like having a conversation or picking up on tone or body language. Others might have more noticeable delays, both in understanding what’s being said and in using words themselves.

4. Neurological or Genetic Conditions

Some medical conditions affect the brain’s ability to process or produce language. These include:

Cerebral palsy

Intellectual disability

Genetic syndromes like Down syndrome or Fragile X

5. Oral-Motor Issues

Sometimes, the muscles involved in speaking don’t coordinate properly. This might be due to:

Apraxia of speech (a motor planning issue)

Low muscle tone in the face and mouth

These issues can make it hard for toddlers to form words clearly, even if they understand language.

6. Congenital Conditions:

  Some congenital factors such as

· Cleft lip and palate – Birth defect which occurs when the fetus lip or palate does not fuse properly

·Microglossia and Macroglossia - Abnormally small and large tongues respectively

· Tongue tie (Ankyloglossia) – Condition which is present from the birth where the frenulum (structure under the tongue) is short or thick and tight

These three conditions might cause Speech Sound Disorder in children in which the children often often misarticulate the sounds

7. Environmental Factors

Adequate Speech and language stimulation at home helps children learn to talk. Delays may occur if:

The child isn’t exposed to much conversation or play

There’s limited interaction or engagement with caregivers

The child experiences neglect or trauma

When the child is exposed to screen for a longer period of time

It’s important to note that bilingual households do not cause delays, though these children may mix languages or take longer to speak fluently in both.

Speech and language delays in toddlers can feel worrying, but early intervention leads to the best outcomes. Whether the cause is developmental, medical, or environmental, a Speech Language Pathologist can help you out.

In case if you and your any loved one struggling with such issues feel free to contact : Reviviscence Rehab

West Tambaram, Perungalathur:

14, Sriram Nagar, Old Perungalathur,

Call: 09940400943

Padur, OMR,

96, Veeranam Road,

Birndavan Phase-I,

Call: 09940400943
